One for One for One.

Alex Valentine - Devening, Blonder Tongue Audio Baton x One for One for One

One of the things that I love most about Chicago is that everyone here, in one way or another, lives a life that places a strong value upon artistic endeavors. Chicago is a city that works, first and foremost – and it also engenders collaborative works among people inclined to do as much. I’m honored to say that local artist Alex Valentine has invited myself and others to work on a collaborative soundtrack, One for One for One, during the opening reception for his upcoming exhibit at Devening Projects. Participants are listed below:

Aay Preston Myint
Alfredo Nogueira
Beau Wanzer
Brian Case
Daniel Luedtke
Emily Elhaj
Jocelyn Brown
Joe Proulx
Jordan Williams
Laura Deutsch
Seth Sher

Blonder Tongue Audio Baton will showcase visual art pieces influenced and inspired by music; the title of the exhibit is taken from a 1950s analog graphic equalizer and the name of an album by The Swirlies.

Please join us for what promises to be a memorable event.

Sunday, January 29, 2012:

Alex Valentine – Blonder Tongue Audio Baton
Devening Projects and Editions

Fresh Starts

Man, what a year 2011 was! Great things all – could not be any happier with life right now. I began working with this guy at DDB Chicago, and have met a lot of wonderful, creative people as a result. This in turn inspired me to spend some time thinking about other things that I could do in my own life to foster creativity – specifically with regard to people I already knew who were doing fun things. I began curating a ladies’ DJ night at this place, and have made quite a few new friends along the way. In the spirit of fresh starts, new efforts and creative goals, I’m going to be updating this blog much more often than I have been – both with event information and anything that strikes me creatively. So – let’s get started! Many things afoot for January. All events listed are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Peace Party at Danny’s Tavern
10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Every second Monday, Danny’s Tavern hosts Peace Party – an event that directly benefits a different social organization or charity each month. By drinking and dancing, you are helping to make the world a little bit better! Part of the proceeds from the bar go to help each participating organization toward realizing a goal that helps our community. This month we’ll be raising funds in support of Chain Reaction at the Broadway Youth Center.

Saturday, January 14, 2012:

Intensity! (Ladies’ DJ sets at Empty Bottle)
9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
1035 N. Western Avenue, at Cortez

Intensity! is an effort on the part of a collective of female DJs in Chicago to interact with one another and members of the community, bringing disparate sounds and styles together in a safe space. Rotating monthly, five ladies will bring their best game to the turntables, playing rare soul, funk, rock, boogie and post-punk – along with everything in between. This month features the following ladies on the decks:

Jocelyn Brown
Meghan Brozanic
Sheila Hernando (Sweaterfunk, Maxx Traxx)
Danielle Mikos (Reckless Records)
Kate Ruggeri (Reckless Records)

Event is free with RSVP! Send your first and last name in an e-mail to rsvp@emptybottle.com with “Intensity!” in the subject line to be added to the list for the event. The RSVP list closes at midnight the morning of the show and all RSVPs must be received individually.

Tickets are $5 for ladies and $7 for gents without an RSVP.
